Work - Fall 2025
This semester, I have worked primarily on writing and production.
Light Installation
TILL Wave Art Gallery, Watertown, MA
This semester, in Elaine’s “Investigations in Light Class”, I was given the opportunity to feature some work with light in the TILL Wave Art Gallery in Watertown. It was a collaboration with Dom and was quite successful in several ways.
This opportunity was a pleasant challenge. The turnaround, specifically, made it rather difficult. We were given only a few weeks' notice to plan, with an original opening date that was earlier than what it ultimately became.
As a result of this tight turnaround, I wouldn’t say I am 100% satisfied with the final results, although I do plan to return and work on it a bit more. I think I am most unhappy with the exposed mylar itself, I wish I had time to come up with greater ways to hide it or implement it into the design of the space a bit better, whilst still achieving the caustic effects it fills the space with.
Furthermore, this experience also provided me with more experience in working with a variety of light fixtures, which I am incredibly happy about. I was able to rent out a few pieces of equipment that Max was fine with me holding on to amidst Review Boards, thankfully. I got to work with the gallery track light system, the 500-watt fresnels, and the 12-inch light bar fixtures. Exploring with this variety of fixtures was both fun and let me learn what worked and what didn’t. It made it clearer to me how I will make it work in doing so; I feel as though it gave me skills to take with me further into my career.
Writing
This semester, I worked more on writing as well. Specifically, I took a Playwriting class; something I’ve wanted to do for a while now. I learned proper formatting, structuring, character development, and a lot more. As an avid fan of theatrical arts, it really spoke to me, and it is something that I want to do more of and hopefully produce at some point.
You can read my short play in its current draft here!
Also, I’ve been trying to free-write a lot more as well. I’ve been trying to get past a lot more of the mental roadblocks in my head that I’ve struggled with. Specifically, the voices that tell me not to do things or that things are stupid, which I’ve been incredibly inspired by Anne Lamott’s “Bird By Bird” to do so. I’ve just been trying to write more and more.
One thing I intend to do as I go further into my time at MassArt is to continue writing. I am taking a Poetry class in the Spring Semester, which I am incredibly excited for. I am also rather excited to work on creative writing projects over the upcoming break.
Production
This semester, I’ve tried to be even more involved in the productions happening. I helped on numerous tech install days, working on moving tech for both “Who Killed Mouthy?” and “Big Show”. Alongside this, I got involved with lights for “Big Show”, being a Lighting Assistant (L2). I spent many hours outside of classes in Pozen working with Zoë, Sarah, and Megan on getting the lights for the final show ready. We did truss work early on, lowering it to the ground, but after that, it was a lot of time spent using the scissorlift, adjusting and focusing lights for the show.
I learned a lot from this experience and am going to move up to Lighting Designer (L1) for All School Show, continuing to work alongside Zoë. I am incredibly excited and am hoping to find even more opportunities to get involved with the tech in SIM over the second half of my time here. I spent a while being a bit nervous to talk to the upperclassmen to find a way in, but I am happy that I finally have.
Other stuff to note is that I am continuing to work on developing other skills that I have previously discussed in these forms. I was involved in COF Theater as an Actor in “Our Town.” I am still pursuing songwriting in my free time, being an avid journaler, filling sketchbook pages, and continuing to find my place in the world.
Thank you for this opportunity, SIM.
